Alfie is a backhoe unlike most of Thomas and Friends characters which are mostly trains.
As usual, what I like most about these toys, as played of course my my 5 year old kid, is its durability. If well kept, your second child should still be able to play with it. In Alfie’s case, even the plastic part of the hoe is still durably screwed in the main die cast arm of the toy, and it’s moveable and raisable.
I havent seen Alfie in any of my child’s Thomas DVD’s, but even then, I find him playing with Alfie and another tractor, Jack, many times. He seems to be making his own Thomas episode with these two. Both have good play mileage with below 5 kids, who watches Thomas and Friends on TV.
