I ordered these trains to add to my son’s (23 months) collection for his upcoming second birthday. I was disapointed to find that the “take along” trains are only half the size of the regular Thomas and friends engins. They will not work on the train table we bought him for his birthday. He loves trains so much that I am sure he will still enjoy them on the floor, I just didn’t read anywhere that the this kind of train was smaller.

Rosie, to my knowledge has guest starred in one video. Thomas regards her as an annoying girl with a crush on him. She ends up helping him out of trouble and I suppose this is an attempt to attract young girls to Thomas land. Alas the video runs a game section where we learn that Rosie is too little and weak to pull regular trains like the others. She gets to pull inflated ballons to children’s parties instead. Not the kind of message I’d want to impart to my child.

My son has this engine, along with many others of the Take Along sets. They do not fit on the wooden system, and Rosie is indeed in more than one episode of the show. (And they have a main character who is female and in the main song of the show, “Emily,” so why another reviewer thinks Rosie was only added to appeal to more girls is beyond me; there are plenty of female trains on the show.) This toy is fun for my son, who is 3. He likes to have the engines “act out” the stories he sees on the show. He takes the stories and expands them to situations he is more familiar with.
The Take Along system is great; the tracks work together, the trains are magnetic on both ends with no “wrong side,” like a wooden set we got from Target did. This means the trains can push their tinders or pull them, just like on the show. My son puts the tracks together on his own, in his own way; when he wants it to be “right” he asks us to help him. Otherwise, they’re not exactly meeting up, but it doesn’t matter to him!
I highly recommend this set to any parent whose child likes Thomas. Being die-cast, they’re practically indestructible!
